Creation Art Center presents “Herencia” La influencia española en la Florida, a photographic exhibition by Asela Torres that explores the enduring presence of Spanish culture in Florida through its architecture, historic landmarks, and built heritage. The exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, October 8, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center, 111 SW 5th Ave., Miami. The exhibition will remain on view through November 30.
Through her photographic lens, Torres traces a visual journey across Florida, with particular attention to St. Augustine, where centuries of Spanish history remain embedded in the city's architecture and historic sites. Her photographs document structures including the Castillo de San Marcos, completed in its original form in 1695; Fort Matanzas, completed in 1742; and the historic Mission Nombre de Dios and the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche, among other sites associated with Florida's Spanish colonial heritage.
But “Herencia” extends beyond Florida's colonial period. The exhibition follows the evolution and persistence of Hispanic architectural and cultural identity across the state, incorporating landmarks such as the Instituto San Carlos in Key West, founded by Cuban exiles in the nineteenth century, and Miami's Freedom Tower, a building whose Mediterranean Revival design and later history as a reception center for Cuban refugees have made it an important symbol of Miami's immigrant experience.
By bringing these buildings together through photography, HERENCIA considers architecture not simply as a record of different historical periods, but as a form of cultural memory. Fortresses, churches, civic buildings, monuments, and gathering places reveal connections among Florida, Spain, Cuba, and the broader Hispanic world that developed over centuries and continue to shape the state's cultural landscape.
Presented at the historic J.W. Warner House, home of the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center, and curated by Grace Piney, the exhibition also creates a dialogue between the architecture documented in Torres’ photographs and the preservation of Miami’s architectural and historic heritage.
