Join us for the next edition of Another Boston Biotech Event!, the free monthly biotech mixer in Kendall Square. Come meet founders, scientists, investors, and operators from across the Boston biotech community in a relaxed setting for good conversation with people building the future of biotech.

AI is now generating drug candidates, protein structures, and inventions of every kind. But who owns them, and can they be patented at all? Our first panel takes on one of the most consequential open questions in biotech IP.

We're reserving roughly half of the panel time for audience Q&A. This is not an event where you sit on your hands listening to other people talk. Come with questions, opinions, and pushback. We want a genuinely engaged discussion, and it can keep going over the mixer afterward.

About the Panel:
This panel will examine emerging patentability and inventorship issues for biotechnology inventions developed with the assistance of artificial intelligence. The discussion will focus on continuing uncertainty in U.S. patent law over the degree and nature of human contribution required for inventorship, including when AI-assisted generation of protein sequences, molecular structures, therapeutic candidates, or other subject matter may support patent protection and when reliance on AI may call human inventorship into question. The panel will also consider practical approaches for documenting human contributions and managing inventorship risk during AI-assisted research and development.

Moderator:

is the Chief Editor of , where he features industry leaders working across the full spectrum of early-stage drug development, from target discovery to preclinical research. Trained as a chemical engineer with master's degrees in business and information systems from Boston University, Ray has worked across biotech, healthcare technology, and media. His experience includes roles at Amwell, Vibe Bio, and MIT's Koch Institute, as well as hosting the Health Unchained podcast. Through interviews, panels, and editorial coverage, Ray helps connect scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, regulators, investors, and executives driving the future of drug discovery.

Panelists:

is a Partner at FisherBroyles, LLP, where his practice focuses on intellectual property counseling, patent prosecution, litigation, and transactions, particularly in the life sciences and biotechnology sectors. Before entering law, Dr. Sheehan was a neuroscientist, earning his Ph.D. from Boston College, completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine, and serving as an Assistant Professor at Brown University. He advises biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on U.S. and international patent strategy, portfolio development, post-grant proceedings, licensing, and patent disputes and appeals. His combined scientific and legal experience also informs his counseling on emerging patent-law issues arising from the use of artificial intelligence and other computational tools in research and development.

is a Partner in the IP practice at Jones Day in Boston. He focuses on patent strategies and transactions involving multimodal drug candidates, from early research through clinical development and commercial launch. He has negotiated transactions at the intersection of AI and drug discovery, including cross-border deals. Having supported a biologics portfolio in-house before returning to private practice at Jones Day, he brings both industry and outside counsel perspectives to how patents shape business goals.

is the Founder and CEO of Secondcell Bio, built around Chromovert, a platform cell engineering platform he invented at The Rockefeller University, where he earned his PhD in the Nobel Prize-winning lab of Günter Blobel. Kambiz is currently pursing biodefense and AI drug discovery partnerships around the validated TRL9 technology. He hosts Another Boston Biotech Event! (ABBE) both out of personal interest and to meet other entreprenurs and potential partners.
