In most indigenous civilisations, ancestors are revered as semi-divine figures who are nevertheless all too human. They feature in creation stories as dramatic shapers of both places and nascent human communities. Their interactions with one another are often read as coded messages about how to live well, or not so well, in the places we belong to. This conference is about the place and importance of ancestors in our contemporary—indigenous, but inevitably colonial and hybrid—sacred landscapes. We are looking for three longer papers (45-50 minutes, plus discussion) and eight shorter papers (20-25 minutes, plus discussion) that may deal with:• Intertextual explorations of indigenous creation stories and the sacred texts of world religions
• Theological reflections on the appropriateness, or not, of indigenous creator-ancestors being compared to God, gods, avatars, bodhisattvas or saints from other religious traditions
• Investigations into the ontological significance of specific places in ancestral narratives
• Reflections on the relationship between ethical codes, place and ancestral stories
• Proposals for ways in which ancestral narratives may be redeployed as codes for ethical behaviour during this era of climate catastrophe
• Explorations of the ways in which indigenous creation stories have been used, or misused, in settler-colonial projects, histories or theologies
• Reflections on the human-animal hybridity of many creator-ancestors, including implications for understanding both environment and human community
The full call for papers and response form is available from https://tebrikuna.net/CFP_Ancestors_Dec.pdf. The cut-off for signing up is the end of July.
