Set a place for those who came before. As the days grow shorter and Samhain draws us toward remembrance, Circles of the High Sierras Temple invites you to spend an evening honoring the ancestors, sharing stories, and enjoying the company of both the living and the remembered.
Ancestor Tea is a casual open house and seasonal gathering centered around the creation of a community ancestor altar. Guests are invited to add to the altar, share offerings of food and drink, remember those who have passed, or simply spend time in community.
We’ll also have a quiet space in the Librarium for anyone who would like to write a letter to an ancestor or someone who has died. Your letter can say whatever needs saying: gratitude, memories, questions, apologies, news from the living world, or simply I miss you.
At the end of the evening, you may take your letter home to offer in whatever way feels appropriate to you, or leave it with CHST to be offered to the elements. Letters left with us are private. They will not be opened or read by the living.
You don’t need to follow a particular tradition or have an established ancestor practice to participate. You’re also welcome to simply come for tea, conversation, and community. Participation in any of the activities is entirely optional.
Food and drink will be shared, and alcoholic beverages may be present both as offerings and as refreshments for guests 21 and older.
Content Note: This gathering centers on ancestors, death, grief, and remembrance of people who have died.
Come share a cup with the living, and leave a place for the dead.
