Join us at RAF Coltishall for a rare evening with Ian Black, former RAF fighter pilot, author and aviation photographer, as he takes us behind the scenes and into the cockpit of Cold War aviation history.
Ian began his RAF career as a navigator on the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom in RAF Germany at the height of the Cold War, before training as a pilot and going on to fly the legendary English Electric Lightning with No. 11 Squadron — becoming the last RAF pilot ever to qualify on the type. Following in the footsteps of his father, one of the RAF's first Lightning pilots, Ian amassed around 400 hours flying this iconic single-seat fighter.
In this evening of first-hand storytelling, Ian will share what it was truly like to fly the Lightning, life on a front-line RAF squadron, and the realities of being a fighter pilot during the Cold War. A must for aviation enthusiasts and anyone curious about the people and machines that defended Britain's skies.
