Gamelan Sekar Jaya brings the vibrant living traditions of Bali to the stage for an inspiring evening of Gender Wayang, Gamelan Semar Pegulingan, and Balinese dance. The evening opens with Rejang Santhi, a beautiful dance composed by Ida Bagus Made Widnyana and choreographed by Ida Ayu Wayan Arya Satyani. A prayer for Indonesia and for the world, the piece expresses hopes for peace, harmony, and well-being. Our multi-talented guest dance director, Ida Ayu Nyoman Dyana Pani, will lead the performance, singing and dancing together with GSJ dancers.
Gender Wayang is one of Bali’s most distinctive traditional musical ensembles. It is commonly performed to accompany shadow-puppet theater and also plays an important role in Balinese Hindu ceremonies. Known for its intricate interlocking melodies, Gender Wayang is one of Bali’s most technically challenging yet deeply rewarding musical traditions, with a remarkable range of moods and character.
The show then enters the enchanting world of Gamelan Semar Pegulingan, an elegant seven-tone ensemble known for its sweet, delicate, and refined sound. Semar Pegulingan was an important musical tradition in the Balinese royal courts from the 17th through the early 20th centuries. Its music is closely connected to Gambuh, one of Bali’s oldest forms of classical dance-drama, which tells epic stories associated with the legendary East Javanese prince Panji.
The Semar Pegulingan program will feature two Balinese dance works. Pengenter Alit, inspired by Balinese offering dances, was composed by the renowned Balinese composer, Dewa Alit. This will be followed by a contemporary instrumental work, Kupu Kupu Kuning, composed by the celebrated composer and former Gamelan Sekar Jaya music director, I Made Subandi.
The evening will conclude with Sutasoma, a powerful dance inspired by the Gambuh tradition. Local guest artist Paul Miller and Ida Ayu Nyoman Dyana Pani will lead the Gender Wayang ensemble, while local guest artist Pete Steele will lead Semar Pegulingan. They will be joined by Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s exceptional musicians and dancers.
Come experience the beauty, depth, and vitality of Balinese music, dance, and living traditions right here in the Bay Area. Bring your friends and family and join us for an enchanting evening celebrating the rich artistic traditions of Bali!
