Bringing together University of Glasgow colleagues to a flashpoint in time, the early 1970s in the United States
About this Event

The 1970s in the United States was a turbulent period of huge social and political upheaval. Bringing together colleagues from the University of Glasgow, this evening event will take us back to this flashpoint in time, marked by the Vietnam war, the Watergate scandal and a growing anti-war movement.

Drawing on themes and ideas explored in current Hunterian exhibition THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY, University of Glasgow lecturers and researchers will share their responses exploring the music of the time, American literature, civil rights and student protest.

THROUGH A MIRROR, DARKLY by artist Naeem Mohaiemen looks at the events of May 1970 at Kent State University, Ohio and Jackson State College, Mississippi, when students protesting the Vietnam war were met with state violence. The exhibition centres Mohaiemen's titular film but also highlights archival materials from the time including cassette tapes of popular music, books, pamphlets and posters.

This series of short talks will be followed by an audience Q&A. Refreshments will be served.
