R'nB howler Barrence Whitfield is a man who lives for the era when rhythm 'n blues and rock 'n roll walked hand in hand. His revved up music and over-the-top vocal style make him a top frontman.. a frantic soul shouter in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett and Don Covay.
Whitfield was born Jacksonville, Florida, 1955. When he was a child his family moved to New Jersey where he began singing in a gospel choir. While attending West Side High School he sang and played drums in rock and funk bands. He could sing with the same passion and power as his heroes. In the early 80's he began performing with former members of the Lyres as Barrence Whitfield & the Savages. They toured worldwide and won supporting slots on US tours with such artists as Bo Diddley, Tina Turner, George Thorogood, Robert Cray and Solomon Burke. Whitfield appeared on the BBC's Jools Holland Show and has also contributed to film scores like the 2007 film Honeydripper. The 2022 album of Barrence Whitfield & The Savages 'Dig Thy Savage Soul' has influences of the old R'nB masters and the Sonics as well. He describes his music as "giving the kids a musical karate chop to the head." He has been called the ‘missing link’ between Chuck Berry and Jack White and currently lives in Boston.
