In this lecture, Amr Khairy will present his new book, “Egypt Ignited: How Fossil Capital Arrived on the Nile,” scheduled for release from Verso, on 27 October 2026.In this global socio-ecological history for Egypt’s integration into industrial capitalism and its transition to steam power between the 1820s and the 1870s, Khairy shows how the Industrial Revolution spread outside Europe to one of the first countries in the world that pursued steam-driven industrialization.
The lecture presents this revisiting of Egypt’s modern history through the lens of the global history of energy and technology. It is a project that captures a glimpse of how the planet was set ablaze by the forces of global warming, from the perspective of nineteenth-century rural Egypt, showing how this history can inform our understanding of the unpredictable nature of global energy transitions, from the past and into the future.
Amr Khairy is an associate researcher at CEDEJ who received his PhD in Human Ecology and Environmental History from Lund University in 2023. His current research investigates the interdependent emergence and uneven impact of global warming throughout different world regions. His research interests converge on Anthropocene history, through an interdisciplinary interest in: the history of energy and technology, environmental history, the history of labor, industrialization, and the history of capitalism.
