What makes music sound American? The Naples Community Orchestra closes the 2027 Season with a celebration of the American spirit: bold, lyrical and unmistakably expressive. The program:
Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man, brass and percussion honoring not a general or a battle, but the ordinary citizen
Barber: Violin Concerto, long lyrical lines and a finale of nearly nonstop motion, featuring violinist Risa Hokamura
Barber: Essay No. 2, a concentrated musical argument written in 1942, the same year as Copland's fanfare
Gershwin: An American in Paris, jazz rhythms, blues melodies and Parisian taxi horns bringing the season to an exuberant close
About the soloist: Risa Hokamura is a Japanese violinist who rose to prominence at seventeen after winning the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Silver Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. She has appeared in recital at the Kennedy Center and Merkin Concert Hall, and performs on the 1715 "Joachim" Stradivarius.
