Ever wondered what actually happens at the Mahjong table, or felt intimidated by all those beautiful tiles? We are demystifying the game in this interactive, beginner-friendly workshop!No experience? No problem! This class is designed from the ground up for absolute beginners. We provide everything you need—all you have to do is show up ready to learn, laugh, and dive into a fantastic new hobby.
Here is a sneak peek of what we will cover during our time together:
• The Story Behind the Game: We will kick things off with a brief, fascinating look at the rich history and background of American Mahjong.
• The Mahjong Toolkit: You will learn exactly what equipment and essentials (and what they are called) you need to set up a proper game at home.
• Covering the Tiles & Card: We will break down the beautiful tile suits and symbols so they make sense, as well as, going over the National Mah Jongg League card together.
• Mastering the Setup & The Charleston: You will get hands-on experience setting up the walls and pushing out the racks. From there, we will guide you step-by-step through "The Charleston"—the fast-paced, traditional tile-swapping passing phase that kicks off every game.
• Guided Play: Best of all, you won't just sit and watch! You will dive into actual gameplay with assisted, guided practice. We will be right by your side to help you read your card, organize your hands, and call out your very first "Mahjong!"
Come by yourself or grab a friend! By the time you leave, you will have a solid grasp of the core rules, a strong understanding of how the basics work, and the confidence to keep practicing.
While mastering this beautiful game is a journey—and we will definitely be offering an Intermediate class down the road to take your skills to the next level—this workshop gives you the perfect foundation to finally understand what American Mahjong is all about.
