They went to Gaza to save lives. They came home knowing they couldn't stay silent. Film screening and a conversation with Canadian doctors.
About this Event

What happens when doctors go into a war zone expecting the worst and still find themselves unprepared for what they see?

American Doctor follows three American physicians who volunteered in Gaza: Dr. Thaer Ahmad, a Palestinian Muslim; Dr. Mark Perlmutter, who is Jewish; and Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, a Zoroastrian Parsi.

They come from different backgrounds, but they share something simple: they are doctors, and they went to Gaza to save lives.

All three entered Gaza more than once to work in hospitals under extraordinary conditions. They arrived with years of experience in emergency medicine, trauma and humanitarian work. They had worked in places where suffering and death were not unfamiliar.

And yet Gaza was different.

The film takes us inside the hospitals, into the operating rooms and alongside the doctors as they try to care for patients amid overwhelming numbers of wounded civilians, destroyed medical infrastructure and conditions that would be difficult to imagine in any hospital anywhere.

But American Doctor doesn't end when the doctors leave Gaza.

They return to the United States carrying what they witnessed with them. They begin speaking publicly, appearing in major media outlets and testifying before Congress. Their work shifts from trying to save individual lives in Gaza to trying to make people back home understand what they saw.

Dr. Mark Perlmutter said “This is what my tax dollars did, what your tax dollars did. They have the right to know the truth.”

After the screening, we'll hear directly from two Canadian doctors who volunteered in Gaza:

Dr. Hassanali Kapasi

Dr. Nour Khatib

They'll join us for a conversation and Q&A about what it means to work as a physician in Gaza, what they witnessed, and what they carried home with them.
