America@250: Frontier, Freedom, and the Force October 17 | 7:30P
From Candidate Yaniv Segal:
As a conductor and composer born in New York City to immigrant parents, I connect deeply with the idea that our musical tradition is not defined by one style or one history. Mark O’Connor’s Johnny Appleseed Suite blends the sound of the concert hall with the spirit of American folk music. Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige draws upon jazz to tell a powerful story of the Black American experience. George Whitefield Chadwick’s exuberant “Jubilee” represents a largely forgotten earlier generation of American composers who worked to establish a distinctly American symphonic voice. Finally, John Williams’s music from Star Wars transforms the orchestra into a sound that has become inseparable from modern American storytelling.
I am thrilled to explore these many facets of the American sound with the Lima Symphony Orchestra and to share them with all of you!
