About this Event
The workshop is a “train the trainer event”. It is designed to support trainers/advisors to put action plans together to help clients move towards higher welfare castration and tail docking or stop these procedures completely in situations where that might be appropriate. In the workshop we will be discussing higher animal welfare methods for lamb castration and tail docking, including Clipfitter, or using pain relief methods including Numnuts.
Dr. Andrew Voas, the Scottish Government Veterinary Head of Animal Welfare will discuss the background to the current policies and consultation around tail docking and castration. Professor Cathy Dwyer, the head of the animal behaviour and welfare department at SRUC will discuss the welfare science research around tail docking and castration. Dr Lesley Jessiman, a social scientist in the animal welfare department at SRUC will discuss how to draw from the human behavioural sciences to help farmers transition to alternative higher welfare methods. The workshop will also include an introduction to some of the higher welfare devices, from Numnuts and Clipfitter coming along to explain their devices and provide people with the opportunity to ask questions.
