About this Event
The expense of housing has been a major issue in Vancouver for decades and even with prices of housing falling right now, affordable housing, especially for young people, still seems out of reach in Vancouver and much of the Lower Mainland. What should our response be, especially, but not exclusively, from the perspective of faith communities?
In All About the Dirt: Reimagining the Economics & Ethics of Land Use in Vancouver, the Centre for Christian Engagement and CityGate Vancouver bring together a panel of experts to reimagine housing in Vancouver. Patrick Condon, UBC professor and author of Broken City: Land Speculation, Inequality, and Urban Crisis, will discuss the nitty-gritty of the housing crisis, Douglas College philosopher Elliot Rossiter will reflect on the ethical dimensions of land use. Tim Dickau, Director of CityGate, will speak about repurposing church properties to create affordable housing, something he has done across Canada, and enter into conversation with developer Charlotte Au about how to make affordable housing part of development throughout metro Vancouver.
This event will also comprise small group discussions and questions for the panelists. Come prepared and ready to bring back new ideas to your faith community, your organization, or your friends and family!
This event is hosted by the Centre of Christian Engagament at St. Mark's College at UBC and co-sponsored by the CityGate Vancouver. This lecture is free but kindly register beforehand. Please note that this is an in-person-only event. Light refreshments to follow the question and answer session.
