About this Event
In January 2025 Alex Abramovitz started a show at Black Dolphin that's now weekly, and on October 18, 2025, the band recorded a live album there. On Jumpin' on Grand: Live at Black Dolphin the seven-piece band plays its own compositions and arrangements, and since February 2026 the weekly show's been called Jumpin' on Grand too.
Abramovitz, a Kansas City native, plays trumpet, sings, and studies the city's jazz history. He started the group as a duo in 2008, then took time off and rebuilt it around Kansas City jazz; the name Alex Abramovitz and His Swing'n Kansas City Jazz Band dates from late 2013. The music is Kansas City jazz from the 1930s to the 1950s, the sound of Count Basie, Jay McShann, and Mary Lou Williams, in a mix of swing-era classics and the band's originals.
On December 14, 2013, the band began a weekly residency at The Phoenix, hosting the Saturday Jazz Brunch, and the run lasted until November 2024. In May 2022 he was named leader of the house band for the Kansas City Monarchs, the American Association baseball club, and the band played every weekend home stand through the 2023 season. It played the Big Slick Celebrity After-Party in 2024 and 2025, with metal drummer and radio personality Richard Christy joining it on stage both times. Jazz Ambassador Magazine has named him its favorite KC jazz singer and instrumentalist.
He plays a 1930s Conn trumpet. In June 2025 Kansas Public Radio aired a Green Lady Lounge set by the seven-piece band that included "Cherokee," "Fountain City Jive," and "Jumpin' on Grand."
