A talk based on Alec Ryrie’s best-selling book The Age of Hitler and How to Survive It.Prior to 1939 most Britons, whether religious or not, looked to Jesus as their moral exemplar. The Second World War changed that. The Nazis’ crimes, and the war against them, have long since become our central moral reference point.
In this fascinating talk, historian Alec Ryrie will tell the story of how the man with the toothbrush moustache came to dominate the western world’s moral imagination. He will also show how, as the Second World War falls off the edge of living memory, the spectre of Nazism no longer haunts us as it once did – a fact that underlies everything from our ‘culture wars’ to the horrifying resurgence of both left- and right-wing antisemitism. And he will ask where, in this moment of flux, our shared values might be going: the answer might be better than you think.
Alec Ryrie
Alec Ryrie is Professor of the History of Christianity at Durham University and a Fellow of the British Academy. His previous books include Unbelievers: An Emotional History of Doubt (2019). He lives in rural County Durham.
