A hacker event focused on technical talks and fun
About this Event

Please note there are only 25 available tickets. A ticket is required for attendance.

About the Venue:

T he venue is a speakeasy and can be a little challenging to find the door. Park behind the building or the lot next to it (not at the parking structure.) The door is in the back (north side of building). Enter through the black security door (NOT the white shed). There should be a greeting station right there where one of the staff members will sign you in.

A LA! is a meeting focused around technology, cybersecurity, hacking, and generally geeky topics. Adult beverages will be on hand. Group participation and feedback are encouraged!

The meetings consist of short “turbo-talks” from anyone that would like to speak on a topic for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.

There are five basic rules of ALA.

  1. What happens at ALA, stays at ALA.
  2. There is no recording or filming allowed, however photos may be taken as long as presentations are not shown.
  3. Participation is highly encouraged and can include interaction with the presenter and heckling if needed :D
  4. Keep your talk under 10 mins.
  5. Pitching product/company or recruiting for headcount? YOU MUST BUY BOOZE.

Presentation Ideas

The scariest thing for most people is trying to figure out what to present on at ALA! While this may seem challenging, it’s actually quite easy. We have some basic suggestions that may help you:

Introduce yourself

Present your own material

Talk about what you're currently working on

We love code, demos and live examples of work. But make it your own. Don’t give us a 101 on a topic that any of us could just look up ourselves or read an already written how-to on.

It doesn’t have to be finished work. If you’ve shown you’re doing your own research but are stuck, come talk to us and we’ll likely be able to help!

Lastly, many of the best ALA! presentations were written one hour before the meeting, or onsite during other speakers. We don’t need or want overly complicated Powerpoint slides.
