Founded in 2001 by Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib in a small mosque in Lahore with just PKR 10,000, Akhuwat began with a revolutionary idea rooted in the Islamic principle of Mawakhat — the spirit of brotherhood first established by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when he united the people of Madinah with the migrants of Makkah.
Today, Akhuwat stands as the world's largest interest-free microfinance organisation, having disbursed over PKR 431 billion DISBURSED IN INTEREST-FREE LOANS to over 3.8M+ NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES across 440+ cities — with an extraordinary 99.84% repayment rate.
But Akhuwat is far more than microfinance. Its programmes span fee-free education through Pakistan's first tuition-free residential university, healthcare, clothing distribution, disaster relief, and pioneering support for marginalised communities.
Akhuwat's model has been featured as a case study at Harvard Kennedy School and recognised by the United Nations and the World Economic Forum. Dr Saqib received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2022 — Asia's Nobel Prize — and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
