About this Event
There is a particular kind of knowledge born from imagining beyond the conditions one has been given. Across the African diaspora, Black people have transformed what was available to them into extraordinary forms of music, movement, culture, and possibility. A Brilliant Inheritance of Light begins with the proposition that this capacity for invention is itself an inheritance.
For Ainsley Burrows, that inheritance is a way of imagining forward. These paintings inhabit The Third Future, an evolving world within his practice where abstraction gives way to otherworldly figures that seem to arrive from somewhere beyond the limits of the present.
At the center of the exhibition is a belief in what can emerge when familiar structures give way. Chaos becomes generative ground: a place of possibility, where unexpected forms can surface and something not yet imagined can begin.
The figures coming forward carry that inheritance with them. They are the light.
