Catrin Street-Mattox
Lecturer in Psychology
About the lecture
Borderline Personality Disorder is often described through deficit-based accounts of empathy, relationships, and compassion. But do these accounts tell the whole story? This lecture shares findings from a co-produced study that combined surveys with life-line narrative interviews to explore how young people experience compassion, challenging social experiences, and recovery. We'll hear what participants say has helped or hindered their engagement with compassion throughout their life. Their stories challenge common assumptions and offer important lessons for healthcare professionals, families, and anyone interested in creating more compassionate communities.
'This research was funded by the Hilary Green Studentship at the University of Birmingham.'
