About this Event
Things fail when forced. Buildings, budgets, schedules, and the people who make them all push back when a design ignores what they want to do. Derrington Building Studio was founded in Austin in 2011, in the aftermath of the financial crisis, and its practice grew out of constraint rather than in spite of it. In this lecture, Tim Derrington traces how a small Texas studio has learned to look for the path of less resistance: not less effort, but less friction. Drawing on built work, project documents, and the daily realities of running a practice, he argues that effort accumulates rather than resets, and that design decisions, relationships, and office culture compound over time. The talk offers a working model of idealistic pragmatism for students preparing to enter practice and for practitioners shaping the firms they lead.
