About this Event
Artificial intelligence is changing the conditions under which journalism operates. It affects how information is produced and distributed, but also how journalists research, verify and assess digital material.
For this edition of AI Monday ai.berlin, AI Nation, DFKI are partnering with Publix to explore the methods journalists need to work in this changing information environment. In a series of short inputs, journalists and researchers will present practical approaches to investigation and verification.
The evening will focus on practical methods for verifying digital content, new approaches to research and the skills journalists need to work confidently in an increasingly AI-shaped information environment.
The short presentations will be followed by a brief summary of shortcomings in tech-reporting by Publix Tech-Fellow Sonja Peteranderl to lead into informal exchange and networking with participants from journalism, research, start-ups and civil society.
This AI Monday Berlin is part of a broader Publix program examining how technological change is reshaping journalism and the public sphere. On 22 September, HateAid co-founder Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and MEP Alexandra Geese will discuss the future of European platform regulation and the growing political pressure on efforts to rein in Big Tech. The event will be held in German. On 29 October, Zetland CEO Tav Klitgaard, media researcher Prof. Dr. Wiebke Loosen and Publix director Maria Exner will examine why AI alone will not solve the structural challenges facing journalism and what responsible innovation in media could look like instead. This event will be held in English.

Deepfakes at the Ballot Box: How AI Threatens — and Protects — Our Elections
Host: Dr.-Ing. Tim Polzehl, CEO Gretchen AI
Info: Elections nowadays are heavily targeted by synthetic media and coordinated disinformation campaigns posing a growing threat to democratic decision-making. This impulse presents "die Gretchenfrage" — an election-protection initiative run together with the State of Berlin that pairs AI-based deepfake detection with fact-checking, prebunking, and media-literacy work. It shows how the same AI that fuels manipulation can also help expose it, and what it takes to strengthen voters' resilience before manipulated content ever reaches the ballot box.
