AI 401: Course Design
Length: Three-half day (Oct 13 & 20)
Modality: Face-to-face and Asynchronous
Description: AI 401 is an advanced, hands-on course that helps participants move from exploring generative AI to designing practical, AI-enabled instructional experiences. Participants apply AI tools and instructional design principles to develop an instructional artifact that can be integrated into a real course, lesson, or learning activity.
Through guided design sessions, participants identify an instructional need, explore appropriate AI applications, develop and refine an AI-enabled solution, and create an evaluation plan to assess its effectiveness. By the end of the course, each participant will have a usable instructional product—such as an AI-supported rubric, prompt set, scenario generator, or critique exercise—along with a plan for evaluating its impact on learning.
The course emphasizes intentional AI integration, learner-centered design, responsible use of AI, experimentation, and continuous improvement, enabling participants to move beyond simply using AI as a productivity tool toward designing meaningful AI-enhanced learning experiences.
AI 401 – Faculty / Course Design
9 hours | Three half-day sessions
Designed for faculty and instructional professionals, this version focuses on applying AI to the design, development, and improvement of courses and instructional activities. Participants work directly with an existing or planned course to identify opportunities for AI integration and develop one AI-enabled instructional artifact that supports teaching and learning.
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Identify opportunities to intentionally integrate AI into course and instructional design.
- Design and develop one AI-enabled instructional artifact.
- Apply principles of effective prompting, learner-centered design, and responsible AI use.
- Develop an evaluation plan to measure the artifact's effectiveness and inform future course improvements.
AI 401 – Students / Course Design
9 hours | Five half-day sessions
Designed for students, this version provides a structured environment for applying AI to academic projects, problem-solving, and learning activities. Participants identify a meaningful instructional or learning challenge and use AI to design, test, and refine an instructional artifact that addresses that challenge.
By the end of the course, students will:
- Identify appropriate applications of AI to support learning and academic work.
- Design and develop one AI-enabled instructional artifact.
- Test and refine their artifact through experimentation and feedback.
- Develop an evaluation plan for assessing its usefulness and effectiveness.
- Demonstrate responsible and intentional use of AI in an educational context.
The overall program will cover AI 101, 201, 301, and 401. By the end of the two-day course, participants will be equipped with practical strategies for responsibly leveraging AI to enrich their courses while preserving academic rigor and human-centered learning.
Schedule:
AI 101: Fundamental AI and Data Literacy (Aug 18 & 25)
AI 201: Basic AI Use (Sep 1 & 8)
AI 301: Appllication in the Classroom/Workspace (Sep 15 & 29)
AI 401: Course Design (Oct 13 & 20)
