We're looking forward to lifting your spirits on October 8th for AHA! Night: Tunes, Treats & Creative Streets! Here's a preview of what's happening:Kick off the 30th anniversary of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park! Pick up a 30th Anniversary Collector Card at the Visitor Center, paint it with watercolors, then fill in your card by getting it stamped at the park and partner sites throughout downtown New Bedford. (Note: The park's celebration continues all month long and through November's AHA! Night!)
As part of the park's 30th anniversary celebration, the Nathan and Polly Johnson House will be open to guests from 5:30–7 pm, courtesy of the New Bedford Historical Society. At this Underground Railroad 'station,' Nathan and Polly Johnson, prominent African American abolitionists in New Bedford, sheltered many people escaping slavery. It was here, in September 1838, that Frederick Douglass found freedom, a new name, and with his wife Anna, his first home in freedom. (Bring your Collector Card to get it stamped here after you explore this important place!)
Also happening during October's AHA! Night:
At the Visitor Center, the 1850s Ladies will share traditional techniques and recipes for "putting up" food for the colder months.
There will be SEVEN different ways to explore and create inside and outside of the Star Store, including hands-on activities for kids and adults, while also discovering the work of area artists!
In an AHA! Seaport Session, Tamari performs live at Luisa Édit/House of Gamboa. Listen to this independent vocalist while celebrating new businesses, fashion, music, and community.
Experience Love Moves: The Healing Power of Dance, an AHA! Moment at Sangha Yoga NB with dancer, wellness instructor, and yoga teacher Jaelynn William. Come ready to move, breathe, and have fun.
See the Jack-O-Lanterns in the Great Pumpkin Parade at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum, with an AHA! Moment performance by the Toe Jam Puppet Band at 5:30 pm. Interested in carving a pumpkin for the parade? Email Lauren at the RJD to contribute.
Get a tarot reading from Maureen and draw spooky doodles with local author and art educator Cara Bean at the library's youth services.
Free admission to the New Bedford Art Museum includes agriCultural: A Biennial Exhibition featuring work by artists who are farmers, farmers who are artists, and artists deeply inspired by agriculture. Then at 8 pm, it’s Reel Talk with Professor Mocha, featuring a screening of Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner, with a pre- and post- film discussion.
And that's not all…
Young adults ages 16–25 are invited to take the mic at the Beyond House open mic, keep your eyes peeled for hidden pumpkins with raffle tickets as part of Nativity Prep's pumpkin scavenger hunt, decorate pumpkins at Pilgrim United Church, hear local artists talk about the spooky side of their work at Arts Illuminated at the Steeple Playhouse, bring your instrument to the Jazz Jam at the Zeiterion's Speakeasy, catch an improv comedy show from Badger Management at the Workers' Arts Center, or get centered with a guided meditation at Serlingpa Meditation Center.
We hope you can join the fun. Many experiences begin around 4 or 5 pm (with the library activities beginning at 3 pm). Complete details are on our website, with more information and activities added daily.
