Join Us for the AGSC All Saints Workshop 2026!
The Association of Graduate Students in Counseling (AGSC) invites you to our annual All Saints Workshop 2026 featuring Arkeria Robertson, "Culturally Responsive Care in Perinatal Mental Health: Addressing Diverse Needs" and Courtney Malveaux, "When Context Matters: Diagnosing Perinatal Mental Health Conditions." as our keynote speakers.
Part 1: Culturally Responsive Care in Perinatal Mental Health explores how mental health professionals can provide more culturally aware, affirming, and responsive care to individuals during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Particular attention will be given to the experiences of Black mothers and other historically underserved populations, including the ways cultural expectations, disparities in maternal healthcare, and barriers to mental health treatment may affect the perinatal experience.
Part 2: Perinatal mental health disorders affect approximately 1 in 5 individuals during pregnancy and the first year postpartum, yet they remain underdiagnosed and often misunderstood or mistaken for “normal” adjustment. Context matters when determining whether emotional, behavioral, and physical changes reflect normative perinatal adjustment or a clinical concern. This presentation examines diagnostic considerations in perinatal mental health with an emphasis on differential reasoning, risk assessment, and clinical formulation. Participants will explore distinctions between normative postpartum adjustment and clinically significant mood and anxiety disorders, review validated screening tools to support clinical judgment, and discuss high-risk presentations requiring urgent intervention. A case-based framework will guide participants in integrating assessment domains to inform evidence-based intervention planning.
