📢 The Ateneo Economics Department Seminar Series is back with a hybrid session! How does the way a society organizes its farming shape who holds power for generations? Join us for a talk on “Agricultural Production and the Formation of Elite Networks: Evidence from the Philippines” by Mr. José Gloria, PhD Candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Looking at the Philippine sugar industry, the paper shows how fixed processing mills created economic chokepoints that concentrated producers’ dependence on local landed elites. It then traces how these conditions shaped the formation of elite family networks, and how those networks may still influence elite capture and the allocation of public resources today.
