About this Event
Step back into 1700s London and discover how a city devastated by fire ended up inventing modern insurance and finance. After The Fire: Insurance, Finance & A Rebuilt City is a major new exhibition at the Bank of England Museum, running 5 October to 27 November 2026.
Walk into a large-scale recreated London street from around 1700, explore a full reconstruction of Edward Lloyd's Coffee House (birthplace of the global marine insurance market), and meet the merchants, underwriters and ordinary Londoners who rebuilt the city, brought to life across an 80 square metre immersive space designed with illustrator Alice Pattullo.
No prior knowledge needed. It's a vivid slice of London history for anyone curious about how disaster gave rise to the financial world we know today, and it's timed to coincide with the Lord Mayor's Show, so expect a buzzing City backdrop too.
