After the Election: Listening Across Generations and Differences

oin us for an intergenerational community dialogue about how we are making sense of the post-election moment. Elections can bring different hopes, concerns, emotions, and uncertainties. This conversation offers a chance to slow down, share experiences, and listen across both generational and political differences.
The goal is not to debate candidates, parties, or policies, or to persuade others to agree with us. Instead, participants will reflect on what this moment feels like, what experiences shape their perspectives, what they hope for the future, and what different generations might learn from one another. Together, we will consider how neighbors and community members can stay connected and have better conversations across political differences.
This event is co-sponsored by BridgeIowa, a University of Iowa student organization, the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council, and the Division of Student Life, bringing students and community members together for open, curious, and respectful conversation. You do not need to agree with anyone else in the room. Your perspective and experiences are welcome.
Dr. David Supp-Montgomerie, an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Communication Studies, combines his expertise in communication with a deep commitment to student life as a Faculty Fellow in the Division of Student Life. He co-leads several projects, including the Day of Dialogue series and the Civic Dialogue Initiative, emphasizing the importance of communication in fostering an inclusive and engaged campus community. David teaches on the broad themes that orient students to communication and culture, as well as the specific theoretical and practical tools involved in public life. These have included: rhetorical theory and criticism; political communication and deliberation; and business and professional communication skills. In all of his classes he seeks to create affirming and intellectually rigorous classrooms focused on nurturing students’ civic and scholarly voices.
***This will also be an opportunity for ICFRC to recognize outstanding supporters, advocates, and community partners, as part of our annual awards ceremony for those who make our community possible each year. Join us to celebrate their efforts as we come together to explore our shared future!
***Looking Ahead - ICFRC’s Community Dialogue Initiative, Spring 2027
This program offers a preview of ICFRC’s new Community Dialogue Initiative, launching in spring 2027. Through expert perspectives and facilitated small-group conversations held across Johnson County, the initiative will bring neighbors together to explore important issues, share experiences, and build understanding across differences. With topics including affordability, immigration, and artificial intelligence, the series will create welcoming spaces for thoughtful, respectful dialogue, where listening matters more than agreeing.
A Special Gift of Thanks to Our Community

For decades, ICFRC honored its guest speakers, from local experts and academics to presidential candidates, international ambassadors, and leaders from around the world, with a commemorative ICFRC mug as a small token of our appreciation.
As we close out 2026, we want to extend that same tradition of gratitude to the people who make our work possible - our community!
Over the past five years, your participation and support have helped ICFRC grow, expand our signature series, strengthen community partnerships, and create more inclusive and accessible opportunities for learning, dialogue, and connection.
As we look ahead to an exciting Spring 2027 season and the launch of our new Community Dialogue Initiative, we invite you to join us for our final program of the year on Tuesday, November 17, at 5 PM.
***Every attendee will receive a complimentary ICFRC mug, while supplies last, as a heartfelt thank you for being part of our story and helping shape what comes next.
