Known to Thai audiences as Kuljira Thongkong, Aey first came to wider attention through The Voice Thailand and later returned for The Voice All Stars. Since then, she has continued developing a much more individual identity as Aey the Ape, while also fronting the experimental-pop band Beagle Hug.
Aey is not a conventional big-voice singer. Her appeal is in the character of the voice itself: cool-toned, slightly strange, conversational and unpredictable, with phrasing that can make familiar material sound completely different.
That makes Smalls a particularly good room for her. Her performances here leave space for songs to loosen up, shift direction and move between jazz, pop and improvisation without forcing everything into a fixed arrangement.
This is the side of Aey that works best in an intimate setting: less about vocal fireworks, more about personality, timing, mood and what happens between the musicians in the moment.
