Advanced Perfume Seminar: Sulfurous Notes (in person)

Perfumer Spyros Drosopoulos joins the IAO for an in-person seminar covering challenging but useful sulfurous materials in perfumery.
About this Event

Sulfurous notes are crucial in certain fruity accords and truffle smells, and can also be used to add industrial effects and smoky notes. They also help to enhance the contrast between other olfactory notes. Deployed incorrectly, however, some sulfurous notes can lend a urinous, kitty litter effect.

Spyros Drosopoulos leads an exploration of difficult materials in a theory-oriented class about sulfurous notes. In this seminar, students will smell sulfurous notes—including but not limited to several mercaptans— learning how they can be deployed in perfumery to create important effects and impressions. We will also examine and explain several formulas that make use of sulfurous notes, demonstrating through practical knowledge how to cleverly use these notes in fine fragrance.

Three hours, in person. Must have previous experience blending.

Take-aways

- A better understanding of how to work with sulfurous notes and effects

- An overview of sulfurous perfume materials

- Several formulas to work with

About Spyros Drosopoulos

Dr. Spyros Drosopoulos is the founder and perfumer of BARUTI Perfumes. Born in the Netherlands, raised in Greece, and educated in Germany, Spyros has had a lifelong fascination with scent and smells. While studying psychology, he discovered the allure of perfume as a tool of seduction. His academic journey continued with a Ph.D. in Sleep and Memory Consolidation, completed Magna Cum Laude. During that time, he encountered the world of niche perfumery. This discovery shifted his focus from the effects of fragrances to the intricacies of their creation. In 2009, he attended a workshop in perfume-making, igniting what would become his second career. Motivated by the creative possibilities of perfume creation, he left academia to devote all his energy into studying the art of perfumery. For him, being a perfumer activates his creativity and satisfies his passion for knowledge and science.
Besides his work for Baruti, he creates for other brands and artists, performs live with scent, explored the intersection of AI and perfumery, and teaches the popular Perfume Intensive course at the Institute for Art and Olfaction (IAO) in LA.
Being self-taught has been a blessing in disguise for this former academic as unhindered by conventions and driven by a deep curiosity and rigorous research, he was free to develop his skill and escape the beaten path. His passion lies in reconstructing everyday scents, whether inspired by flowers, objects, or anything that catches his imagination. Spyros’s expertise spans niche and commercial perfumery, as well as experimental and artistic scent projects. Unlike many in the industry, he believes in demystifying the world of perfume. He enjoys sharing his knowledge in a typical scientific no-nonsense manner, with those eager to learn about the materials and techniques behind fragrance creation.
