Let’s “echo back and forth” the comforting truths of God’s Word as we learn from Luther’s wit and wisdom in the Large Catechism!“Catechism” comes from the Greek word for “echo” and refers to a teaching style involving questions and answers that highlight important truths worth passing down the generations.
Luther wrote his Small Catechism to be memorized by children as they learn the chief teachings of Holy Scripture. He wrote his Large Catechism for adults to grow deeper in their understanding.
Along the way, Luther uses playful analogies and humor, teaching us to laugh at ourselves as we learn more about how God cares for us in the home, in the church, and in our neighborhood.
The lessons Luther gleaned from Holy Scripture are timeless, relevant today as much as 500 years ago: marriage, money management, prayer, forgiveness, and on goes the list!
Dr. MacPherson will lead a midweek Bible study on Luther’s Large Catechism. Participants are encouraged to read assigned sections at home. (Luther’s writing style is relaxed and engaging, so the readings are not too much of a chore and his use of humor means that the readings certainly are not a bore!)
Class discussions will follow the study questions provided in "Studying Luther’s Large Catechism: A Workbook for Christian Discipleship," which participants may work into their home devotion schedule if they wish. However, everyone is welcome to listen and join the conversation, whether they or not complete the readings and workbook beforehand.
This study will be taught by our scholar in residence, Dr. Ryan MacPherson (https://www.ryancmacpherson.com/)
