In 2015 the U.S. State Department picked Adam Larson's quartet as one of ten ensembles to tour for its American Music Abroad program. The band spent 35 days in Africa, visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Benin, and Ghana.
Larson grew up in Normal, Illinois, and started saxophone at 11. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in jazz performance on full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music, spent 11 years on the New York scene, and moved to Kansas City in 2019. When he was 25, Nate Chinen reviewed his third album, Selective Amnesia, in the New York Times and called him "the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success."
He's recorded nine albums as a leader. His "With Love" trilogy came out on Outside in Music: With Love, From Chicago and With Love, From Kansas City in 2022, then With Love, From New York in 2023. DownBeat gave the Chicago record 4.5 stars and the New York record four. He's toured Poland, India, Taiwan, Holland, Germany, and South Africa, and he's written more than 200 original compositions for his own groups.
He also leads the museum's October 10 workshop in the Blue Room on improvisation, composition, and the music business.
