About this Event

Youth-Focused For-Purpose Communities of Practice

Together 4 Youth and The Youth Impact Foundation are two collective organisations working in the youth mental health and wellbeing sector that combine to deliver a Community of Practice (CoP) to improve provider practice. Between them, they represent dozens of organisations that deliver mental health and wellbeing supports in schools, ranging from one-person startups to well established and large organisations, including not-for-profit organisations and social enterprises.

Accountability and co-design with young people

Accountability to young people and co-designing your program with the very students and teachers you’re working with will drive lasting and meaningful impact, moreso than one designed in isolation. Whether you are looking to rework existing programs you offer or stand up new ones, this CoP will provide a number of tools you can use to make them 'accountability-led' and 'stickable', ultimately driving better outcomes to our students we serve.

By directly responding to needs that are surfaced from the students themselves during program design, this empowers the students to have ownership and a sense of purpose in driving the program themselves. Done well, accountabilty and co-design is powerful, and good facilitation takes practice. This CoP will provide you concepts that are critical whether this is your first time doing ‘co-design’ or if you’re well practiced in the space.

Session concepts

Concept 1: What is accountability?

Accountability to young people is about moving beyond just listening to young people’s voices. It’s about communities, services, governments and systems becoming accountable to young people for the role they play in their lives.

Concept 2: What is co-design?

Co-design is the practice of bringing the people who benefit from design into the process of design itself, rather than creating something without engaging key beneficieries and assuming it'll work. In the case of creating student-centric programes, a program co-designed with students will have a far higher efficacy than one created without them involved. There are a number of tools and techniques required to do this effectively.

Concept 3: Combining accountability and co-design in program design

We'll look at how to effectively combine accountability and co-design to create powerful programs that change student lives. This might look like young people + adults working together as true partners, taking action on the ideas young people share, adults and programs reporting back to young people, participation or co-design processes.
