A Tribute to Angie Stone
Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz presents A Tribute to Angie Stone, featuring The Polyesta Playas, on Monday, December 21, 2026, at Aretha’s Jazz Café inside Detroit’s historic Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts.
The celebration honors the life, music, and enduring legacy of Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and producer Angie Stone—a pioneering voice in hip-hop, contemporary R&B, and neo-soul. Her contralto voice, personal songwriting, and soulful interpretations connected generations through themes of love, resilience, empowerment, and self-discovery.
Angie Stone’s Musical Journey
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began singing gospel and became a founding member of The Sequence, one of the first all-female rap groups to gain national recognition. She later worked with the R&B group Vertical Hold before establishing herself as a solo artist. Her albums Black Diamond, Mahogany Soul, and Stone Love helped define contemporary neo-soul, blending classic R&B with modern rhythms, storytelling, and sophisticated arrangements.
