Synopsis
A grieving widow. A house with secrets. And an invitation to a seance…
When Clara O’Hare’s husband passed away, she felt her life was over. But when she moves into a new home to escape the memories, she may not be alone. Clara struggles to determine if she going crazy or really seeing ghosts.
Desperate to find answers, she attends a séance at Lord Oroberg’s remote country home surrounded by a colorful cast of strangers: a “charming” rogue, a timid fiancée, a domineering mother, a brilliant scientist, a passionate suffragette, and the enigmatic medium Wesley Lowenherz. But something sinister has decided to make itself known. When the guests start turning up dead it will be up to Clara and Wesley to uncover a murderer and find out what the spirits of the manor are dying to tell them!
Laced with gothic romance and paranormal mystery, A Spirited Manor is a fast-paced adventure that examines the journey from grief to purpose, and the return to life after loss.
“ The Victorian-era thriller, written by Seattle author Kate Danley in the high-handed style of Penny Dreadful pulp literature, combines several genres of horror stories, incorporating haunted houses, ghosts, supernatural demons, and even an Agatha Christie-style whodunit into its theatrical mix. ”- Vashon Beachcomber
“ What a fun ride! All the way through, this play kept me guessing. Kate Danley plays with the Victorian novel’s supernatural obsessions and makes them glow with new life and wickedly subversive fire. ”-Margaret O’Donnell
“ A marvelously funny and mysterious adventure that has such a rich history and plot, we can’t turn away! A thrilling ride! ”-Cheryl Bear
“ A spooky, funny, non-stop ride of a penny dreadful!! Danley has written not only an expansive and FUN cast of characters, but she fits them into an enticing, well-paced mystery with genuinely surprising twists and turns. Furthermore, it’s rare to read a play with so much adventure in its stage directions. I cannot emphasize enough the endless possibilities for design this play has. You could stage it in hundreds of different ways. And I would be in the audience for each one. ”-Daniel Prillaman
“ With A SPIRITED MANOR, Danley has created an exemplary addition to a familiar and beloved genre, but with a feminist twist. Infused with horror, humor, and melodrama, what’s really exciting about this script is the unique staging and opportunities for innovative and adventurous design it presents. Perfect for a theatre company looking for a larger-cast production, this play would surely be a hit in October or any time of the year! ”-John Bavos
“ A fantastically phantasmal thriller & haunting whodunnit. Everything on these pages drips with ghoulish atmosphere — from the evocative characters, to the enticing lore, and the deliciously arch gallows humor. The action moves at a tense clip, and boy! there are surprises. So grab some pumpkin-spiced something-or-other and smash that download button: autumn’s here, and Danley’s brought the spooky. ”-Jonathan O’Neill
“ What fun! With the first line, Danley grabs you by the throat and carries you along on inspired gusts of period specific dialogue that nonetheless crackles with a contemporary spin. And as tightly woven as the plot is, Danley has created a wonderfully blank canvas with which directors, designers, and cast members can have fun turning into their own highly spirited, highly mannered manor. ”-Doug DeVita
