This screening is part of the Havel 90 Festival Film Marathon, a three-day exploration of Havel’s relationship with cinema within a four-day celebration of his life, art, and legacy.

A group of friends enjoying a picnic in the countryside is suddenly confronted by strangers who force them into a senseless interrogation. A courteous host soon appears, apologizes for the intrusion, and invites everyone to an elegant outdoor banquet. The apparent return to order quickly reveals a more disturbing form of control, especially when one guest chooses to leave.

Written by Jan Němec and Ester Krumbachová, the film turns a simple gathering into a precise allegory of power. Courtesy becomes coercion, obedience is disguised as hospitality, and the guests gradually accept rules no one has the courage to question. Its dark humor and ritualized language place it among the sharpest political works of the Czechoslovak New Wave.

The authorities recognized its implications immediately. The film was banned, briefly returned to cinemas during the Prague Spring, and was suppressed again after 1968 for the next two decades. More than half a century later, its portrait of conformity and voluntary submission remains unnervingly current.

Havel 90 Festival is organized by the Czech Center New York and the Vaclav Havel Center with support from the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association.
