About this Event
For thousands of years, the Psalms have given voice to nearly every dimension of human experience: joy and grief, anger and gratitude, doubt and faith, solitude and communal celebration.
Ensemble Altera brings A New Song: Psalms for the Soul to Boston in a program that explores these extraordinary texts through centuries of choral music.
The program ranges from the haunting beauty of Allegri's Miserere to music by Bruckner, Parry, MacMillan and Rutter, alongside newer works by Michael Garrepy and Ian Gabriel Corpuz.
By turns intimate, ecstatic, consoling and visceral, Psalms for the Soul shows why these ancient words have inspired composers across generations and cultures.
This Boston performance comes immediately before Ensemble Altera enters the recording studio to preserve the programme as its next commercial album, making the Emmanuel audience part of an especially important moment in the project's life.
A chamber choir described by the BBC as “something extraordinary,” Ensemble Altera has rapidly established itself among America's leading professional vocal ensembles. Its recordings have received the German Record Critics' Prize, five stars and a Christmas Choice from BBC Music Magazine, and international critical acclaim.
Join us in the beautiful acoustic of Emmanuel Church for an afternoon of extraordinary choral music before the programme travels south on tour.
