About this Event
Come discover the history of the Fredericton Region Museum’s mysterious “Winslow’s Dutch Bible.” Thanks to the research of Dr. Gary Waite, Professor Emeritus of History at UNB, President of the York-Sunbury Historical Society, and a specialist in the history and culture of the early-modern Netherlands, we now know that this mysterious volume is not actually in Dutch, is not a complete Bible, and, despite the long-standing story, was not brought here by Loyalist Col. Edward Winslow.
Tracing the fascinating history of this mysterious volume, this talk will take us on a voyage of discovery from Revolutionary America to the Fredericton Region, across the Atlantic to German and Danish Moravians, and into the world of Dutch, Danish, and British colonizers, missionaries, and the enslaved people of the Caribbean who spoke and read a now-extinct language.
How did this remarkable book travel across continents, cultures, and centuries? And how did it come to be here? All this (and much more!) is contained within one mysterious volume whose history is far more fascinating than first suspected.
