A ML-Augmented Approach for Heat Transfer Analysis of High-Speed Systems Join us for a talk on real-time thermofluid CFD on Thursday OCT 22 at 5:30 PM CDT at the Downtown Huntsville Library's Auditorium
About this Event

Join us on Thursday 2026 OCT 22 for the October installment of our speaker series! We will be in the Downtown Huntsville Libray; take the first right to get to the auditorium on the first floor (if you reach the reception desk you have gone too far).

Abstract:

This talk describes an approach for rapid heat transfer analysis based on the use of historically anchored, fast running local correlations anchored using Machine Learning to predict aerodynamic heating. The approach is implemented in both MATLAB™ as a standalone option or a custom FORTRAN interface to the Elmer FEM solvers. The tool set is used to obtain surface heating rates and skin temperatures for high-speed systems such as missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles. The overarching technical goal of this new effort was to demonstrate the ability of a new fast-running aerothermal analysis methodology to provide accurate and efficient real time thermal simulation results for use in vehicle design and analysis, and real time computing environments such as Hardware in the Loop, (HIL) simulations of Thermal Protection System, (TPS) systems on hypersonic weapon systems , and war-gaming environments. The improvements included various Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) coupling strategies, reduced order models, machine learning, and Finite Element Model, (FEM) coupling.

About the Speaker:

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Robert Tramel has personally and as part of larger teams, produced a large body of diverse applied mathematical algorithms for modeling and simulation programs. He has extensive experience in the development and modification of a variety of commercial as well as government software programs. Dr. Tramel has been active in the use of CFD tools as part of Integrated Testing and Evaluation programs in support of a variety of NASA/DOD/MDA programs. These programs help solve real world problems such as dropping ordnance more accurately and safely out of bomb bays, returning the Space Shuttle to flight after the Columbia accident, improving acoustics of multiple weapons platforms and the analysis and verification of the liquid oxygen feed line and loading system for NASA’S Space Launch System. He is an established leader in the development of analytical tools and the application of these tools to solve complex physical phenomena. He has been a leader in expanding the capabilities of the OVERFLOW2 and FUN3D CFD codes for high-speed flows.
