India’s textile traditions are deeply rooted in its history, regional cultures, communities, rituals, and everyday life. Among these traditions, the sari holds a unique place--not merely as a garment, but as a living expression of India’s cultural diversity. From the handlooms of Bengal, Odisha, and Assam to the silk-weaving traditions of Banaras, Kanchipuram, and the Northeast, each region tells its own story through its fibres, colours, weaving techniques, motifs, and methods of draping. In this talk, Anita will explore the sari as a cultural document, examining how textiles preserve the stories of a place, community, craftsmanship, and tradition. Drawing on examples from her own collection and research, she will reflect on how Indian textiles have travelled beyond geographical boundaries, fostering cultural exchange and creating enduring connections between countries, including India and Thailand.Anita Bose is an author, heritage researcher, artist, and educator based in Bangkok, with a long-standing interest in Indian and Southeast Asian cultural heritage. Her work explores textiles, traditional arts, festivals, mythology, and the cultural connections between India and Southeast Asia. She has researched and collected Indian textiles from diverse regions and has delivered presentations on Indian textile heritage in both Thailand and India.
