Why take this course?
Ireland's history is a story of powerful rulers, dramatic conflicts, cultural creativity and lasting change. This engaging course explores the journey from the age of the Irish kings through Anglo Norman settlement, Tudor conquest, plantation, political upheaval and union with Great Britain. Through fascinating historical evidence, literature, art and visual sources, you will uncover the events and personalities that helped shape the Ireland we know today.
As well as examining major turning points, the course explores everyday life, culture, religion, economics and the ideas that influenced generations. Inevitably the relationship between Ireland and England will loom large. You will also discover how international events such as the Reformation and the American and French Revolutions affected Ireland and her history. You will use primary evidence, historical writing and a wealth of visual material from paintings to cartoons as well as extensive reference to Irish literature to encourage debate and insight.
Whether you have a personal interest in Irish heritage, enjoy history, or want to better understand the roots of modern Britain and Ireland, this course offers fresh insights, lively discussion and the opportunity to explore one of Europe's most compelling historical stories through both traditional and modern historical interpretation.
This is a live, tutor led course. Learning with like-minded people, there will be lots of opportunities to share your own knowledge and ideas and to hear from others. For those who want to further their learning, there will be a second courses to cover Ireland up to the current day.
No previous knowledge is needed, just an interest in the topic and a willingness to explore and share ideas.
