About this Event
A City to Live In
A city walk and dialogue on homelessness, public space and care in the urban landscape.
How welcoming is our city to people who have no place to call home? Who is allowed to stay and for who is public space actually designed for? Through this Young NVTL event, we explore what it means to inhabit a city without having a place of your own. What makes a city accessible, liveable and welcoming? And how can landscape architecture contribute to public spaces where everyone has room to exist?
In collaboration with @PauluskerkRotterdam, we explore these questions through two parallel activities: a city walk guided by people with lived experience of homelessness, sharing their personal stories and perspectives on life on the streets; and a landscape architectural field exercise, investigating how Rotterdam’s public spaces enable, constrain or exclude different forms of use and occupation. We bring these perspectives together in a dialogue about the role and responsibility of our profession. What can we learn from these experiences? And how can we contribute to a city designed not only to live in, but to truly make a life in?
