Comparing these wines side by side reveals a fascinating mix of historical ties and distinct modern flavor profiles. With indigenous grapes recently experiencing a deeper appreciation, and with the Holiday Season nearing, a burning question is which of these proud nations produces the best wine? Both Greek & Italian wines have a long and storied history with world’s most ancient viticultural locations. Today Greece’s oldest varieties have found a growing audience on the international market, thanks to passionate sommeliers and wine historians. Italy has long been the gold standard as the greatest wine producing country that the world has ever known. The nation ministry of agriculture and foresty has officially recognizing over 350 grape varieties. Standouts include Aglianico ,Barbera, Cortese, Friulano, Nero D’ Avola. Among Greece’s more than 300 indigenous grapes, several are millennia old. Grapes such as Assyrtiko, Limnio, Robola and Liatiko are just a few that draw particular attention for their world class quality, with traditional and modern styles that align with 21st century palates!
