About this Event
Difficulty: Moderate/Easy
Appropriate for: All ages and anyone interested in history
Leader: Kyle McGrath
About Kyle: Kyle is a volunteer and board member of the Friends of the Middlesex Fells. He authored a history of the 90mm site which was published by the Medford Historical Society, and along with Maddie Morgan leads the 90mm Meadow restoration project.
About the hike: We will take a short hike from Medford High School through the Lawrence Woods to visit the historic site at the 90mm Meadow. The meadow was a US Army anti-aircraft artillery site from 1951-58 and gradually became one of the most important butterfly habitats in our ecoregion, the Boston Basin. Today it is threatened by forest succession, human damage, and invasive plants. We will learn about the history of the meadow, what makes it such an important pollinator habitat, and how the Friends of the Fells, DCR, and our partners are restoring the meadow today.
Steady rain cancels.
