As we gather to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Twin Cities JACL, our special guest will be renowned actress and Asian American Pacific Islander advocate Tamlyn Tomita.Tomita made her screen debut as Kumiko in “The Karate Kid Part 2” (1986), which has been enjoying its renaissance over the years with the series “Cobra Kai.” She is also known for her roles in “The Joy Luck Club,” “Picture Bride” and “Come See the Paradise.” On television, she’s starred in numerous TV shows, including “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” “Chicago Med,” “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Star Trek: Picard.” She’s also appeared on stages across the country.
Her current venture, along with her husband, Daniel Blinkoff, is the newly opened Outside In Theatre in Highland Park, Northeast Los Angeles, a live theater venue whose mission is to bring daring, dynamic and authentic untold stories by unheard voices.
A native of Los Angeles and a proud AAPI embracing her Okinawan, Japanese and Filipina heritages and what it means to be American, she continues to advocate in her work on stage and screen for stories to be told from a “golden” perspective.
