About this Event
Join us for a five-week exploration of portrait drawing from life, designed to help you build confidence, sharpen your observation and develop a more expressive, individual approach to portraiture.
The course will run in the Dean's Office at Summerhall, on 23 and 30 September, and 7, 14 and 21 October, from 18:30 to 20:30.
Working directly from a live model each week, you will explore the key elements of successful portrait drawing, including proportion, structure, features, light and shadow, expression, mark-making and composition. Through guided exercises and longer studies, you will have the opportunity to experiment with different materials and approaches while developing both technical skill and personal style.
The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some drawing experience who would like to strengthen their portrait practice. Teaching will be supportive and practical, with demonstrations, individual guidance and plenty of time to draw.
By the end of the five weeks, you should feel more confident in approaching the portrait, more comfortable drawing directly from observation, and better able to create portraits that capture not only likeness, but also character, mood and expression.
