At 3pm PT we will gather at the Rainbow Community Center parking lot, 2830 Salvio Street in Concord, and share stories of why we came. At 4pm we will walk to the Concord BART station via Todos Santos Plaza. Once we reach the BART station, we will stop briefly at the station to "say his name" then move on to the area where Timmy was found. We will have an Ofrenda and speakers to honor Timmy and inform us about the fight to Reopen The Case of Timothy Charles Lee.
In 1985, Timothy Charles Lee was a half-Black, half-Native American gay man. He was a successful fashion design student who was on track to study at Milan, Italy, one of the prominent fashion powerhouses in the world. Timothy and his mother would participate in the early 70s occupation of Alcatraz. He was on his way to home to Berkeley when he fell asleep on the BART train and missed his connection. He was unable to secure a ride home. He was at the last stop at CONCORD BART station when his body was discovered at 5 a.m. hanging from a tree. Roughly two miles from where he was found two Black men were attacked earlier that month. Racial violence has been high since opening up the BART transit corridor to suburban areas like Concord and Layfayette.
The police quickly investigated shutting the case as a suicide. The NAACP and other community organizations forced an FBI investigation but again suicide was ruled. Family and friends have held the strong belief that Timothy was the victim of a violent murder because he was Black and in the "wrong place at the wrong time." His freedom to move through space and time was attacked. His mobility was taken away. His body hanged as a warning to all in the Bay Area to stay out of Concord and neighboring cities. Much of the racial divide still exists in Concord oppressing many marginalized groups. Its time to speak to the past to reconcile the present and build a future for everyone.
The police will not protect us. It's Important for, black, gay, Jewish, lesbian, labor, leftist, Chicano, Latin American, Asian American, Native American, disabled, and all people who are targets of Klan and Nazi terror, to organizations, organize together to defend ourselves, our and our communities. We must hold the Concord Police Department accountable for their mishandling and cover-up of this case and bring justice to Timothy Charles Lee and our community.
Pls, join us during sunset for a Day of Remembrance for Timothy Charles Lee. Sign the petition to recognize all those that died from racial violence while moving through their day.
