The Palace Theater will screen Jaws in 35mm, and there isn't another like it in the world.
A 51-year old print was unearthed through a private collector. After further research, the serial number on the print is 7507 - which is proof this is an early production print for Jaws, inspected at Universal Studios on January 10, 1975. Jaws would open on June 20, 1975 and go on to become the first blockbuster, and set the record for the highest grossing film of that time. What will screen is a print used by the studio and Speilberg to show at press screenings and test screenings. This is a step into a time machine, as the film print shows its age, but the sound is original - carrying the sound mix that won the Oscar for Best Sound at the 1976 Academy Awards.
There is only one screen permitted of this extraordinary find - and it will be in Syracuse, NY.
Before Jaws will be a special presentation by Best Selling Author Ryan Dacko and the prequel to Jaws, The Book of Quint - now 19 months as a best seller on Amazon Audible. A limited number of special edition hardcovers will be available during the event.
After the screening of Jaws, a special presentation of The Deep (1977) which carries a special connection to Syracuse, NY.
Author Ryan Dacko, will detail how he trained under the original owner of National Aquatic Services on Erie Blvd. Dr. Jere Hallenbeck. Hallenbeck was a dive master and lead dive instructor to Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte and Jaqueline Bassett on the set of The Deep. He would continue to operate the first dive shop in Syracuse until his passing in 2003.
Bio:
Dr. Jere John Hallenbeck (1941–2003), commonly referred to in connection with “Jerry Hallenback” or similar spellings, was an educational psychologist and pioneering scuba diving figure based in the Syracuse, New York area.
He was born on January 20, 1941, in Little Falls, New York, the son of Howard F. Hallenbeck and Gladys May Mosher. He lived in Jamesville (near Syracuse) and died on August 9, 2003, at age 62 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. His former wife, Carole E. Smith, predeceased him. He was survived by a sister, Jean H. Brockley of Altamont; two brothers, Howard C. of Syracuse and Jack E. of Lairdsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hallenbeck is best known as the founder of National Aquatic Service (NAS) in Syracuse in 1959. He partnered with Paul Snook to expand the business into a major scuba diving school and retailer. NAS became the largest scuba diving school in the Northeastern United States, training tens of thousands of people (reports cite figures over 33,000–36,000 certifications) with a strong safety record of no diving accidents during its long history. It offers instruction (from beginner open-water certification through advanced and instructor levels), equipment sales and repair, free diving and snorkeling, college partnerships (including with Syracuse University), boat diving on Skaneateles Lake (via their pontoon boat Grandad), and dive travel.
He is described as an educational psychologist and diving pioneer who helped establish and grow the scuba diving culture in Central New York. The company he founded continues to operate in Syracuse today under later leadership, carrying on his focus on training, safety, and local diving opportunities.
