About this Event

Respectfully… can we talk about the story that kept going: 35 years of IWA?

Powered by Beetroot Consulting, with the live launch of this month's episode of The Root Podcast, recorded with Jacqueline Hughes-Lundy of the Inspiring Women Awards.

Thirty-five years ago the Inspiring Women Awards started recognising women whose work was going unrecognised. It is still going. In this Respectfully… conversation, Jacqueline Hughes-Lundy joins us to talk about what kept it going: the commitment, the reinvention, the stories women told about themselves on that stage, and what the awards still do that nothing else does.

So, respectfully… can we talk about it?

This is a real conversation about recognition and who gets it. Thirty-five years of women's stories is also about:

  • Recognition
  • Legacy
  • Representation
  • Visibility
  • Reinvention
  • Portfolio careers
  • Social justice
  • Resilience
  • Who tells the story
  • What has changed
  • What has not
  • The rooms that still decide who is seen

Respectfully… brings the people, ideas and questions from The Root Podcast into the room, giving Manchester a chance to continue the conversation together. This month's episode, recorded with Jacqueline, goes live at the end of the night.

The evening will begin with a podcast discussion that opens up the theme and surfaces the key tensions, questions and lived realities. Following a short chat with the podcast speakers which will bring the key moments from that pod discussion. Our host, Lauren Gibson, will then open those ideas out with attendees, creating a wider conversation where people can reflect, respond, add texture, challenge carefully, and build on what has been said.

If you want to watch the discussion, if you want a lecture, if you want to find out 'the answer', you will be disappointed. This room is being deliberately shaped for a different kind of conversation. Made for participation, for enough room, for honesty.

Hosted in the beautiful setting of Avesta Hair, the event has been designed with care, comfort and decompression in mind.

There will be picky bits, herbal tea, alcohol-free cocktails, fidget spinners for those who fancy it.

This event is inclusive of all genders, from anywhere. Those who have stood on an awards stage, those who have never been nominated, those curious. Recognition is a leadership issue, a culture issue and a power issue, to be discussed by all.

At the end of the evening, the pod guest will be invited to press the big blue button and launch this month's episode of The Root Podcast live, together, in real time. Our room will choose to move the conversation out of the margins and into public space.

We then move into this month's theme: Respectfully… can we talk about 'the story that kept going: 35 years of IWA'? This section includes the episode trailer, the conversation with Jacqueline Hughes-Lundy, and a hosted discussion with the room exploring the realities behind the theme: recognition, legacy, representation, visibility, reinvention, portfolio careers, social justice, resilience, who tells the story, what has changed, what has not, and the rooms that still decide who is seen. This is a hosted conversation rather than a panel.

Host: Lauren Gibson

Info: There will be some time to chat to others in the room, before the evening ends with the launch moment. Jacqueline Hughes-Lundy will press the big blue button, launching this month's episode of The Root Podcast live in real time with everyone in the room.
